Dental Technology
At Smiles LA we use cutting-edge dental technology to provide you with safe, fast, and effective results!
Digital X-ray
In the past, most dental professionals had to use the traditional x-ray systems, which require film development. These days, we use digital x-rays due to their many benefits. A digital x-ray is safer and much quicker than its film predecessor. If the image comes out blurry, we can instantly retake a new one. Digital x-rays are a crucial diagnostic tool that helps us gain a better understanding of the inner workings of your mouth, more specifically the teeth, roots, and alveolar bone.
Laser Dentistry
Lasers have been used in partnership with traditional dental instruments since 1990. We are excited to provide for our patients an array of laser treatments designed to speed up recovery time, improve accuracy and kill bacteria more effectively than non-laser treatments.
Benefits:
• |
Limits and sometimes eliminates the need for a drill
|
• |
Patients report that laser, by contrast, is much more relaxing than the alternatives
|
• |
Shown to speed up the healing process
|
• |
Helps to control bleeding
|
• |
Minimizes or replaces the need for anesthesia
|
• |
Is more precise |
Laser therapy is not dangerous and is just as safe as any other piece of dental equipment when it is used correctly by a professional. As a precaution, we will provide you with special glasses to protect your eyes. Remember, lasers have been around for nearly thirty years, and after almost three decades worth of testing, you can rest assured you will not have any unseen side effects.
Ultrasonic Scaler
We use ultrasonic scalers for most adult dental cleanings. These devices use ultrasonic vibrations to help break down the plaque and calculus on the teeth that cause gingivitis and periodontal disease. The ultrasonic cleaners create microscopic bubbles that implode on the surface of the tooth, killing microbes and removing plaque and tartar in the process. Our instruments use a thin tip to better navigate in the periodontal pockets to help maintain optimal gingival health.
The procedure uses water and/or an antimicrobial liquid called chlorhexidine. It can remove tartar buildup in hard-to-reach areas, with no damage to the tooth enamel. Manual scaling often uses pressure for cleaning, while the vibration produced by the scaling tip of an ultrasonic scaler is barely perceptible. This makes ultrasonic cleaning suitable to those with sensitive teeth. The cleaning process is faster than manual scaling, making your visit more comfortable.
After your teeth have been cleaned with the ultrasonic cleaner, your teeth will be hand scaled to check for any residual deposits and then polished.
3D Imaging
3D imaging gives Dr. Michel H. Elyson, DDS, FICOI a more comprehensive overview of your teeth and gum tissues. This allows us to better diagnose any potential problems and determine the next step in an effective treatment plan. We may utilize 3D imaging for cosmetic or restorative purposes, orthodontic treatment, and dental implants.
Cone Beam CT Scan
A cone beam CT scan is a diagnostic tool that produces a 3D representation of your teeth, gums, nerve pathways, and underlying bone structure within a single image. We typically utilize cone beam CT scans when a regular x-ray is not enough. Cone beam CT scans are ideal for surgical planning, the diagnosis of TMJ disorders and tumors, and the evaluation of bone structure and tooth orientation.
